The Rise of the Reunions

So, I just watched the most awkward performance ever. That my friends, was the SClub reunion for Children in Need.

Now I love my 90s cheesy pop classics from SClub to Steps, Backstreet Boys to Five and of course, the Spice Girls. It made my childhood what it was and was what made high school discos actually worth going to so you could bust out the moves and notes you had been rehearsing in the bedroom for days *ahem* weeks beforehand. I remember going crazy to Reach for the Stars and trying to find a boy to dance with before Never Had A Dream Come True came on. Ahhh, innocent days.

But that was then, and this is now. 15 years on.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for reunions if the band actually want to do it and can actually still sing a note. Unfortunately, the performance last night was neither of these. Tina, Jo and Hannah in particular I don’t think showed on ounce of enthusiasm through out. And Jo, would have been good if she had warmed up a tad before hand. Stiff and completely out of tune, particularly in the first two songs. Ok, I’ve got to give them credit I suppose, I mean it has been 12 years, but I don’t think they were ready to come back yet. If at all. Just really under-rehearsed. It looked like they were plonked on screen and made to do it otherwise they would get shot or something. Just pretty uncomfortable to watch.

Just me?

You could always do what Busted and McFly have done and merge together to make the reunion less terrible to listen to?

Maybe not.
Man, were Busted really that poor at singing before? Wow. Heck, at least these guys are having a blast and still enjoy what they do now, even 10 years on. Gotta love a bit of Air Hostess!

Then there’s the Backstreet Boys. They really know how to wow the ladies, even today. For some of them I think their voices have actually improved since they were last together? Awsome. More manly. And again, they’re clearly having a blast and enjoying what they do.

The best one so far though, closely topping the Backstreet Boys comeback *swoon* has to be the Spice Girls performance at the London 2012 Olympic Ceremony. What an entrance! They were all in character, Posh Spice being sleek and moody, Scary Spice having huge hair and looking WILD and Baby Spice in her short short dress. That’s what the spice girls were about and they brought it right back. The vocals weren’t bad either considering they were performing in the new Stratford Olympic Stadium to no less than 80,000 people.

And that’s how it’s done folks.

What’s your opinion on all these 90s reunions and who do you hope will get back together next? Or should they all just be left well and truly alone?

Till next time!

Edit: The first video isn’t embedding. Apologies. No idea why. Maybe because it belongs to the BBC (copyright bull and all that) or maybe I’m just being a WordPress noob again, but the other videos were all poor quality.
